Mixed Media Flower Works, 2003-2006

I am interested in beauty, but I mistrust it. Instead, I look for beauty that exists in tension with the materials or the circumstances that invent it.
I seek a duel role: to allow for fleeting escape into a fantasy world of gleaming or decorative surfaces, while drawing you back to confront contradictory materials, text, or uncomfortable placement.

My flowered sculptural and installation work reflects my girlhood fixation for glittery surfaces and lush, imaginary landscapes. This series consists of wall wreaths and “kissing balls.” The kissing balls are freestanding orbs covered with a world thick with silk flowers, glitter, butterflies, and birds. At first glance, their densely covered shells speak to one ideal of beauty. Yet, upon closer inspection the diorama reveals something a bit nastier is occurring, as the birds and insects seem to be locked in a battle for existence amidst the fertile and sparkling landscape. It is the truth of our fantasies come to life; while our shallow imaginings may be full of shimmering beauty, the grittier realities refuse to be left behind.

The wreaths, like the kissing balls, attempt to display a contradictory universe, yet are more overt in their meanings once the text has been read. A heart shaped wreath reads the declaration “Liar”. Bluebirds perch on a flowered tableau that displays the word, “Fraud.”
